Best coffee maker I've ever owned. Granted, my previous coffee makers have been Gevalia cheapness. Good enough for the in-laws on Thanksgiving but not high quality. I usually use the stand over the sink with the kettles and cone method. OK, and I mistakenly thought the best way, until I bought this maker. Previously I bought the Zojirushi bread machine and was mightily impressed. So I decided on the Zojirushi after reading all the reviews. No problems. I loved this coffee maker from the moment it popped up in my search. When it arrived, I unpacked it and checked for all those problems people reviewed it said that it had. I was easily able to figure out the top, brew coffee without spilling it, and fit the cone filters into the top with no problem. So I am not what the fuss is about.

I've been a coffee drinker for the past 15 years and my little Braun 4 cupper did just fine as a "to go" in the morning. My wife decided she now wanted coffee in the morning, so we had to upgrade. At first glance we liked the Cuisinart Grind and Brew, especially to do away with the grinder as an extra appliance on the counter. However, after less than a week with the Cuisinart, I was ready to take a sledge to it due to the mess on all the parts and the required cleanup and drying every day. Luckily we were able to return it. This time I did a bit of research and kept being drawn back to the Zojirushi despite never hearing their name before. I measured our counter space because of comments of it being too tall. However, no worse than the Cuisinart and much slimmer. My other concern was because my wife's morning starts two hours before me. Any leftover coffee always tastes burnt anyway.

I liked the "idea" of the thermal carafe, but was then concerned if it would stay hot. Finally decided to buy it, but then had some last minute misgivings as recent reviews were complaining of leaking and other defects. Fearful Amazon had gotten a bad batch, I looked elsewhere, but decided on Amazon as they have the easiest return policies. Using "Super Saver Shipping" it arrived in 7 days and looked good. Setup was a no brainier, although I still read through the surprisingly thin, but very adequate manual. Ran a test batch of water and had no leaks and no obvious problems. My wife commented on it being noisy, but it didn't really phase me. (It reminded me of when a coffee pot needs cleaning due to calcium buildup.) However, this will be running when we're asleep. I too use #4 filters. To make them fit the #3 basket, I make a fold on the bottom of the filter, then another fold on one side, and it fits OK (but not perfectly) and is useable.

The only problem I've encountered is that occasionally the floating water-level indicator sometimes gets stuck at the bottom of the water-level tube as I pour water into the maker. A gentle tap on the side usually knocks it free. The coffee is great, we even find that we are using less coffee in the maker as we were with the Black and Decker and Mr Coffees before this one. It brews quickly and stays hot for hours. We are very happy with the Zojirushi Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker. We have not experienced any of the leak problems that a few others have commented on and, while number 4 filters are a little tight in the unit, they do work. The carafe keeps the coffee warm for hours and, since the carafe eliminates the need for a hot plate, the coffee gets none of the burnt taste you get with traditional units. While brewing, the unit seems louder than others we have used, but not oppressively so. This is an excellent coffee maker that we would recommend to others. Still very happy with the coffee maker after more than a year. Went out and bought a bottle brush to clean the thermal carafe because the inside was looking more "golden brown" than "gleaming stainless steel". Scrubbing wasn't getting it done. A nice soak with OxyClean took care of it (rinse thoroughly!). Still makes great coffee! This coffee maker is the first that I have used that has a thermal carafe.
